10 Effective Steps to Internet Marketing Success

Over the years, I’ve read thousands and thousands of marketing articles, both online and off. But to this point, I have never read any article that was what I considered to be 100% idiot-proof – meaning even a dunce, moron, or complete idiot couldn’t screw up the process.

So I decided to write such an article. And if you read and judiciously apply the ridiculously simple, but profoundly effective and proven success steps presented in this article, I am 100% convinced beyond any shadow of doubt that anyone can absolutely, positively make money with Internet Marketing.

Why am I so confident in these steps? Because these are the exact same steps I’ve used to build nearly 100 profitable websites of my own, in a very short period of time. Here are the steps:

1. Brainstorm Your Domain Name

This is an important process, so don’t rush it. Even if it takes you weeks or even months to come up with a domain name you’re satisfied with. Take as much time as you need. Your domain name is that important.

I’m a firm believer in creating generic domain names that utilize your primary keywords. For example, NewyorkCityHotels.com or NapaValleyWines.com. Having a generic domain name serves two crucial purposes:

First, it will attract a more targeted audience to your website. A targeted audience will give you a much higher conversion ratio – allowing you to make maximum use of the traffic you receive.

Second, generic domain names that utilize your primary keywords will help with your search ranking. While SEO experts have opposing viewpoints whether or not this actually helps, based on my own personal experience, I can tell you that it does.

By the way, because of the astronomical number of domains on the Internet, you may have to get a little creative in order to utilize your primary keywords in your domain name.

For example, if your first choice, NewYorkCityHotels.com is already taken, try playing around with different variations of your keywords.

For instance, try this variation, HotelsinNewYorkCity.com…or this one, CityofNewYorkHotels.com. Also, don’t be afraid to use hyphens in your domain name. Using this technique allows me to utilize my primary keywords 100% of the time.

It also allows me to use the much preferred .com domain. You should try to use .com domains whenever possible, because most people will automatically put a .com on the end of a domain when they type it into a search engine. This puts you in prime position to pick up traffic from domains in your category that utilize extensions other than .com.

2. Register Your Domain Name, and Forget It

After you decide on a domain name, don’t build your website right away. Register your domain name, and forget it.

Why? Because in my opinion, you should never build a website without having a plan to promote, as well as monetize your website. Develop a well-thought-out marketing plan going forward, then when you build your website, you can hit the ground running.

3. Develop Your Marketing Plan

I’m a member of several small business forums, and without fail, the two questions that get asked most often are:

“How do I promote my website?” or, “How do I get free traffic to my website?” Those two basic questions get asked every single day.

That’s why it’s so important to develop a marketing plan in advance. You need to know the answer to those questions, before you build your website. You can’t get to your destination, if you don’t know know where you want to go.

4. Your Budget Determines Your Marketing Plan

If you have thousands of dollars to work with, then you have many more options when it comes to promoting your website. For example, you can buy ads in offline publication, as well as online publications.

A word of advice: Unless you are an experienced marketer with extremely deep pockets, stay away from pay-per-click advertising. PPC advertising will eat up your advertising budget quicker than Usain Bolt breaks world records.

In reality, most people coming online don’t have thousands of dollars to work with. In fact, most people coming online have little or no money at all.

But that’s the beauty of the Internet. Even if you are broke, you can still promote your website effectively, if you know what you’re doing.

For example, you can participate in social media networking, and promote your website via mega-popular sites such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and a host of other social media websites.

Other free and highly effective promotion methods include article marketing, forum posting, guest blogging, RSS feeds, volunteering your expertise on Question & Answer sites like AllExperts.com and more.

5. Learn How to Implement Your Marketing Plan Effectively

Starting a business – any business without having even basic marketing skills is downright foolish. Competency in marketing is the most important business skill that you can have.

If you become proficient in the art of marketing, it will allow you to become profitable that much quicker. And there won’t be anything that you can’t accomplish.

Some of the greatest sales and marketing books ever written are located right under your nose, at your local library – and they’re free. Do yourself a favor and study the classics. Many of the marketing techniques being used today are based on sound marketing principles established many decades ago.

A few of my favorite marketing books include The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy, Advertising Secrets of the Written Word by Joe Sugarman, Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz, Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples, Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy, Magic Words That Bring You Riches by Ted Nicholas and How to Write a Good Advertisement by Victor O. Schwab.

If you can’t find these books at your local library, you can pick them up for just a few dollars on Amazon.

6. Apply What You Learn

It’s not enough to just read the classics, you have to apply what you learn. Otherwise, what’s the point? That means reading the books more than once – several times if necessary.

Actually, you should read the books as many times as it takes for the information to sink in and become second nature to you.

You should also take copious notes, and practice writing ads over and over and over again. You should give yourself regular written exams on the information in the books, and each time you test yourself, your goal should be to score 100%.

Sounds like hard work, doesn’t it? It is. The question is how hard are you willing to work to get what you want?

7. Monetize Your Website

There are a number of ways that you can monetize your website – from selling advertising on your site to affiliate programs. My preferred method is affiliate programs.

Why? Because affiliate programs are completely hands-off for you. No billing, no inventory, no hassles. You simply choose from among the thousands of affiliate programs available on the Internet, select your program of interest, and promote the living daylights out of it. Then take your checks to the bank…that’s it.

8. Take Your Income to the Next Level

Once you start making $50 per month with affiliate programs, build another website, and start promoting another affiliate program. And when that website starts making $50, build another website and another and another.

Why? Because if you have 10 websites making $50 per month, that’s a monthly income of $500. And therein lies the secret to making money on the Internet.

Why beat yourself up trying to make hundreds – or even thousands of dollars with a single website? Take the path of least resistance. Build a bunch of websites that make just $50 per month. If you can build fifty websites in a year, that’s a monthly income of $2500, or $30,000 a year.

Does your current job pay that much? And the beauty of this method is you can keep giving yourself a raise. If you build another fifty websites the following year, you just doubled your income to $5,000 per month.

And if you can build another fifty websites the following year, you just tripled your income to $7500 per month.

The key to making this method work is building simple, low-maintenance websites. Just add content once or twice a month, and forget about them.

Think it can’t be done? Think again. I’m doing it, and so are thousands of other smart and resourceful entrepreneurs.

9. What About Content?

The key to having a website that other websites want to link to is having quality, content that is relevant to the overall theme of your website. You can either produce the content yourself, import it from somewhere else, or a combination of both.

If you elect to import your content from somewhere else, you can either use free content from article directories like EzineArticles, or you can purchase PLR articles, which I don’t recommmend.

Why? Because hundreds of other people purchased the exact same PLR package as you. So those articles have to be completely rewritten, which is a time-consuming process.

Whichever way you choose to go, just remember, it’s important to have lots and lots of relevant content on your website.

How much content? The more the better. After all, the more content you have on your website, the more often your visitors will return to read that content.

10. Build Your Website

Okay, now that you’ve properly laid the foundation for success, it’s time to build your website. The type of website you build will again depend on the amount of money you have to play around with.

I have a bunch of websites that I paid absolutely nothing for. And I have websites that I paid hundreds of dollars for. My recommendation: If you don’t have to spend money on a website, don’t.

Nowadays, it’s not necessary to spend a lot of money to get a decent looking website.

But whatever you do, be sure to purchase your own domain name. You definitely don’t want the name Blogspot, WordPress or Homestead in your domain name. It just looks amateurish.

I buy most of my domains through NetworkSolutions.com, because I’ve been using them for years, and I’m comfortable with them. Their domains cost a lot more, but they more than make up for it with great customer service.

That’s something you just can’t put a price on. That being said, I’ve also purchased $10 domain names from GoDaddy without any problems.

One last thing, don’t beat your brains out worrying about SEO. Just make sure your primary keywords appear in your title tag, and you’ll be just fine.

2. Blog - Google loves a blog, especially blogger.com, Squidoo and Wordpress. You can add HubPages to that list too. Create a target keyword focused page on your target keyword focused blog, update with a few similar posts, maybe mention the other blogs with a link or two (vary target keyword hyper link a little) and you are almost there. Create at least one RSS feed from each of them and submit them as in 1.

The Cunning Brilliance of PageRank

A few weeks ago I found myself in the subway of New York City. Posters and billboards from a prominent bank promoted credit card decaled the underground landscape.

These well-crafted advertisements promised ten dollars back for every $100 spent on subway fares. It gave the current economic crisis and recession as the explanation for their incredible generosity and compassion.

Everybody around me seemed thoroughly impressed by this overwhelming gesture of selfless charity; many discussed in earnest how they were planning to sign up for this card to enjoy these charitable savings. It seemed I was the only one, the Christmas Grinch of the crowd, who perceived this advertisement strategy as more cunning and brilliant than selfless and generous. What an ideal time to hook people on yet another credit card, especially with the holiday season already upon us. Obviously the long-term interest this credit card company was anticipating far overshadowed their likely short-term promotional costs.

Indeed it was a cunning and brilliant strategy, much the same, I thought to myself, as Google's page rank system.

At first glance it seems a very wise, fair and indeed brilliant system for determining positioning within the search ranks. On closer inspection, however, it is even more brilliant and cunning than most are giving it credit.

In the past, creating good, unique and newsworthy content, coupled with intelligent onsite optimization strategies, was at least enough to get your website found. These days are now gone, regardless of what some naïve or misleading SEO experts might still tell you.

Page Rank has now become the single most important factor in having your site found in the organic search results of the leading search engines. Page Rank is determined by the quantity and quality of websites that are linking to yours. Each website link acts as a kind of vote for the site it links to, and passes some of its own page rank to this site. The higher the page rank, and the more relevant the content of the site, the more significant the affect will be.

Since search engine bots cannot view your site in the same way a human views it, this strategy allows user popularity to have a significant affect on the algorithm these search engines are using. The belief is, of course, that the more quality and relevant sites that are voting for yours, the higher the probability that your site is a good one, and therefore deserving of a higher position.

Of course, this system is not perfect, and for obvious reasons, but it is certainly superior to deciding the importance of a site purely on onsite content. The reality is, there are thousands if not million of webmasters who can write unique, quality content. There are even more who know how to optimize this content for the search engines. However, millions of sites cannot be number one for a single keyword or phrase. Page rank must decide the difference.

The problem, however, is that the top search engines have now leaned so far away from onsite optimization, in preference of offsite optimization (i.e. page rank), that you are likely to find all kinds of lousy content and add riddled sites at the top of your searches. Putting a greater importance on links, however, plays significantly in Google's favour. This is especially true today, as reciprocal and 3-way link exchanges have now been significantly devalued, along with paid links and link directories.

Google's intent is that links should be entirely organic, occurring naturally when other webmasters like your site enough to add a link to it. This way of achieving links however, can take a very, very long time, as most Internet users do not know that they are supposed to do this. Most Internet users add the sites they like to their favourites, they don't create a keyword rich link to it from their own highly relevant site. Nevertheless, this is just one of the many ways Google favours older more time-proven sites over newer, get rich quick sites. The fact is, unless the content of your website has just revealed something of tremendous news importance, it could take years before your quality site acquires enough natural, keyword rich links from relevant sites to significantly boost you to the top of the search engines.

The conundrum, however, is that nobody will find your great content, and thereby link to it, unless you are on page one or two for at least one keyword or phrase (one that gets searched for that is). So if you do want to acquire natural one-way links, you pretty much have only one choice. You will have to advertise.

Google now provides the best online advertising available. Not only is it inexpensive, it is targeted towards your keywords.

This means a much higher conversion rate. People will find your product or service when they are looking for it, not when they are looking for something else. And with around 80% of North American searches done on Google, it just wouldn't make sense to concentrate your efforts anywhere else (unless your loyalty lies elsewhere).

Knowing this, guess who will reap the largest rewards of this new lean towards offsite optimization? The reality is, if you want your internet site to one day make it to the top of Google (and Yahoo and MSN) for an important keyword or phrase, you will have to acquire a substantial number of natural links. Since this could take years, as most webmasters are selfish and don't link for nothing, and most Internet users don't know to do this, you are bound to spend a small fortune with Google before your site is able to stand on its own. Of course Google won't make as much of a profit from you once your site is on the top, but there will be millions of others who will still be vying for this position.

The bottom line is, you will need to spend money if you one day want to make money.

The only question is how much money can you afford to invest? Or should I say gamble, because no matter how much money you spend, there are no guarantees.

The results, of course, are purely organic, and Google's algorithm can change at any time. Besides, by the time you're actually on the top, your content and unique features will likely be outdated and not that impressive anymore.

Google insists that you cannot purchase or pay for the organic results located on the left side of the screen. If you are caught purchasing links that are intended to indirectly improve your search engine ranking position, you will either be significantly penalized, or removed from Google entirely. However, the only significant way to increase naturally is to pay for advertising on the right side, so people can actually find your great content and unique features, and provide you with these natural links.

Of course, there are some other ways to promote your site, such as blogging, posting on forums, and creating videos on Youtube, etc. The catch is, however, that if you're not careful, you will be penalized for spamming (excessively promoting your site where you are not supposed to). This is why most forums these days have the no follow meta tags added to their code. Otherwise, you will just have to get creative in achieving and maintaining high PR links that are relevant and keyword rich.

Unfortunately, if you do find a way to attain these links in any way that Google considers unnatural, it will eventually update its algorithm and ensure you are penalized for your imaginative endeavours.

Personally, I've never seen so many people work so hard at what is considered cheating. Couldn't we at least give them part marks for creativity? After all, you won't even let them see the marking rubric.

There are actually websites that will measure the ranking of your website. For those of you that don't know what page rank is, it's a tool put together by Google that determines the effectiveness or efficiency of your Web site.

The higher your page rank, the higher your Web site is listed in the various search engines, and that means more traffic to your site. This, in essence, means more people are looking at your site, your products, your services, thus putting more money in your pocket in the form of paying customers.

If more people are going to your Web site then less traffic is going to your competitors' Web site. Unfortunately most people don't even know what page rank is but those visitors that do will place your website in a higher esteem than your competitors and feel that your content is much more valuable and insightful.

Now you are probably wondering how page rank determined? And more importantly how do you increase your page rank?. Well, let's look at the first part of that question.

One way to help determine your page is when another site links to your page with a back link. The more back links you receive from other pages the higher your page rank. It's a good idea to make sure the back links are coming from sites that have content on the same theme as yours.

This process can get quite involved and a little messy because all back links don't carry the same weight or force. The higher the page rank that a link is coming from the more beneficial it is in terms of boosting your page rank. So if you get links from a lot of pages with low page ranks it will not have as strong an impact as a few pages with higher page ranks.

Now this is the complicated part: If you have a page that has a page rank of 7 and it is already linked to 10 or 15 other pages then it will not be any more beneficial to you than a page that has a page rank of maybe 3 or so. There is only so much linking that a page can do. It's almost like the law of diminishing returns, in other words after awhile it begins to have the opposite effect.

Another way to improve your page rank is through the use of web directories. Not only will this increase your page rank but it will also increase the traffic to your site. So if you submit your site to a large number of Web directories you will be able to increase your rank. There are a number of web directories you can submit your website or blog to.

There's a host of other items that will definitely help you to increase your ranking and the general traffic flow to your Web site. Also if you are curious about the page ranking of your own site you can see exactly where you stand by doing a Google search for page rank. This should help you to find some of the sites out there that measure page rank. Once you find a site all you have to do is put your own URL in the designated box and you will have your answer. A page rank of 6 or higher is very high.

Read through free articles in Google's extensive Webmaster Help Center for SEO tips, not to mention insight into Google's search engine!

Submitting your Blogger or BlogSpot blog site to Google Webmaster Tools will enable Google to find, index, and rank your site. For those who are new to this, you may go to the official Google Webmaster Tools site to create a new webmaster profile.

Once you got a webmaster profile setup, you'll be asked to verify your site. There're two ways to verify your site. You can either add a meta tag or just upload an HTML file. However, adding meta tag is the only way for you to verify your blog site as Blogger or BlogSpot does not allow you to upload a HTML file at the moment. Just follow the instruction to add the generated meta tag to verify your blog site. I'm not gonna show here. I'm sure you know how to do it!

After your blog site has been verified, you'll need to add a sitemap to your webmaster profile. By adding a sitemap, you'll be providing Google with more details and information about your Blog. With this, Google will crawl your site, report information on any errors in the sitemaps tab, and index your blog site at a faster rate. Click the “Add a Sitemap” link and this will take you to another screen where you should choose the type “Add General Web Sitemap”. The only way to add a sitemap is to use either of the following 2 sitemap file URLs:

http://yourname.blogspot.com/rss.xml

or

http://yourname.blogspot.com/atom.xml

For Blogger or BlogSpot Feeds That Has Been Redirected to FeedBurner

Though you can easily redirect Blogger or BlogSpot feeds to FeedBurner now, this has a side effect - you will see some warnings if you submit the default Blogger or BlogSpot sitemap file (yourname.blogspot.com/rss.xml or yourname.blogspot.com/atom.xml) to Google Webmaster Tools. See screenshot attached below.

This is because the Blogger or BlogSpot generated rss.xml or atom.xml you've submitted to Google Webmaster Tools Sitemaps is actually redirecting to the FeedBurner feed and that causes invalid XML errors.

Fortunately there's a simple fix. Just delete the existing sitemaps and submit a new General Web Sitemap that has either of the following 2 sitemap file URLs:

http://yourname.blogspot.com/rss.xml?redirect=false

or

http://yourname.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false

You should now see your sitemaps console with the correct setting with no warnings anymore. See screenshot attached below.

However, Blogger or BlogSpot users who wanted to submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools have always had some disadvantages. Since we can't publish a real sitemap to the domain we're using we had to settle for only submitting a partial sitemap by using our default site feeds which only contain the last 25 posts. Fortunately, there's a trick that lets you submit your entire Blogger or BlogSpot blog site to Google Webmaster Tools. Thanks to Kirk @ phydeaux3 for this useful tip.

Previously the root-level Blogger or BlogSpot feeds did not accept any query parameters, but when Blogger or BlogSpot added the redirect=false one, they also seemed to open up those feeds to all the known Blogger or BlogSpot query parameters. And that's how you can submit more than the standard 25 posts. First off, figure out how many posts you have by going to Blogger or BlogSpot Edit Post page and select only published posts, it'll tell you how many total posts you have. Then you can use the max-results and start-index parameters to expand the number of results obtained, and to submit more than one map if needed.

Note: Currently Blogger or BlogSpot limits the max-results to 500 entries. This has gone up and down a couple of times so it could change. As of right now the upper limit appears to be 500. But 100 was the limit at one time.

I'm going to use the max limit of 100 in my examples, you can use more if that's what you want. So to get the first set of 100 posts the URL I'd submit would be:

rss.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

or

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

Then, if I've more than 100 posts (I currently have 105) I can create another sitemap with the URL:

rss.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

or

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

If you notice, just increase the start-index number by the amount of results you're getting. So the first sitemap started at 1, and returned 100 results, the second sitemap would use the start-index of 101 (100+1). Now that should automatically cover me for the next 95 posts. If I had more than 200 posts, just create another sitemap with the start-index of 201 (you get the idea). Google Webmaster Tools will automatically download the sitemaps (usually about once a day) and if I've made a new post it should get added to the mix.

Having said all that, two last things. One, I don't really think all of this helps any (if at all). Blogger or BlogSpot blogs aren't that difficult to crawl and Google will probably crawl your blog just as well with or without a sitemap of any kind. Two, if you really wanted to create a non-feed sitemap with some sort of sitemap generating tool, then according to this recent post at Google Webmaster Central Blog, you could upload a sitemap for Blogger or BlogSpot through another verified site like maybe Google Pages?

Currently 500 is the max post (as Kirk states), but to be on the safe side, stick to 100. I hope you find this post useful.

Inbound Links

To increase your blog’s Technorati Authority and improve your blog’s Technorati blog rank, all you need to do is to increase the number of inbound links (links from other blogs pointing to your blog) to your blog. Here are several ways to increase your blog’s inbound links.

Claim Your Blog

The first and obvious step is to register an account with Technorati and Claim Your Blog. The Technorati Authority of a blog won’t increase until your blog has been claimed in Technorati.

Now Start Building Links

Your Technorati Authority and Rank will begin to improve as the links back to your blog increase. One common way that bloggers increase the number of links to their blog is to leave comments on ‘DOFOLLOW’ blogs. To help prevent comment spam, many bloggers implement a ‘NoFollow’ on the links in their comments, so if increasing your Technorati Authority is your goal, leaving comments on ‘NoFollow’ blogs will not help to accomplish that. It’s also important to choose blogs that have PageRank. The following is a list of blogs with Pagerank from 3-5 that implement ‘DOFOLLOW’ on their comments.

If you are making a lot of posts and comments and getting a lot of backlinks but your authority rank on Technorati never seems to go up, it is probably because the website or blogs linking to you have not pinged Technorati since they posted your link.

You can search Google and Yahoo for your backlinks (i.e., search for link:dotcommogul.net in Google) and submit all of the blogs or websites that link to you using Technorati’s ping tool. If you have a large list, it might be easier to use Sebastian’s Technorati Ping Application. Technorati will add the backlinks to your blog’s count when it receives the pings, increasing your authority ranking! Don’t forget to ping Technorati with your own URL when you update your website, so your own links out will be counted. I’ve added Technorati to my blog settings under Writing (rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping) so that my blog automatically pings Technorati when I publish a post.

Viral Linking

Viral linking is frequently used to gain backlinks but I think it should be used with extreme caution if at all. You will gain backlinks very quickly with viral linking, but Google just might ban you when it discovers a lot of link farms linking to the same links. This technique was used a lot by John Chow and, as a result, Google banned him. They have since reindexed his blog but he no longer ranks high for “make money online” or even his own name.

Linkbait

Content is still king and creating quality posts still is an extremely effective way to get backlinks to your blog. Write posts that deliver what people want to read about and they will link to it. It also helps to spread a little link love around yourself if you want to get some back. Link to others and they may check you out and link to you. Dirty Tricks

A lot of bloggers claim to have methods to skyrocket their Technorati Authority overnight, but I would stear clear of them. It’s a good way to get banned from Technorati. John Chow is probably the best example of a blogger intent on manipulating Technorati and it is no surprise that he was banned from the Top 100. Not quite as spectacular as Alex King, John has an authority of 4640 giving him a high position if he was allowed in the Top 100.

Maximize Traffic With 10 SEO Power Tips

How do you know what type of content is really going to attract the right searchers?

In this article I wanted to cover a few very basic tips that you can keep in mind when building high-performance strategies. Remember that good search engine marketing is not about trying to manipulate or "fool the search engines." Good SEO skills are more about creating genuine relevancy for well-written content that deserves to be found because it is truly the most relevant and useful to your audience of readers.

What students quickly discover in the 5-Day classes is that the optimization skills are not nearly as hard as many people make them out to be (even for the most competitive phrases,) once you've been trained and understand the full scope of influences that are at work. The biggest advantage that we have had is all about the "accuracy of information."

1. Write content that your audience is already looking for within the last 90 days.

True keyword research is not about 'guessing at keywords' but its all about researching actual data. How are your SEO research skills using Wordtracker or Keyword Discovery? At the SEO Workshops we teach much more than the traditional "keyword research" methods. We help students learn "Keyword Forensics" and how to quickly tap into the hidden niche trends that 99% of most Webmasters never even notice.

2. Does your Web copy speak to the reader or does it speak about yourself?

Remember that your Web site should be focused on your audience first and appeal specifically to a niche interest. When writing your Web copy, you need to dialog in an appropriate tone and format for the right audience. Some of the most interesting content will have more appeal if it speaks to your audience in terms of "you." You can, you might, you will, yours, your and you're INSTEAD of we, ours, we're, we will, we can, etc.

3. Focus on writing for the human audience first and search engines second.

While search engine optimization is important to your visibility, try writing your content first. Most people don't write their best when trying to optimize and create content at the same time. Focus on creating highly useful content that is extremely focused on one topic per page. Once you have completed your writing so that you are pleased with it, then go in to do a mild re-write for the search engines.

4. Tips for triggering idea generation and giving your strategies a unique twist.

While many people seem to spend time exploring their competitor's Web sites, we encourage you to lead the way with new ideas. Try not to be obsessed with what the competition is doing, but be creative and start your own new trends. Spend just a little more time working on your projects this week than you did last week. Setting yourself apart from the competition is easier than you might think and gives you a huge advantage over others.

5. Creating your content so that it "speaks" to a specific audience of visitors.

Think of how your Web copy reads and ensure the dialog flows smoothly. Read your work out loud and see if you can improve the tone of your message with natural expression. Keep your specific audience in mind. How you write for senior citizen (in tone and in format) may differ considerably from writing for an audience of for example "new parents." Always ask yourself "what is important to these readers?" Rely on researching accurate data to eliminate guess work.

6. Remember strong calls to action

Without a firm call to action, don't expect the reader to naturally guess at what you want them to do next. Plain ordinary dialog that asks the reader to take the next action will usually work best. Dialog that is written for voice (similar to the way a broadcaster writes to project their personality.)

7. Build your search engine optimization skills in the beginning with the "stress free" approach.

If you are new to SEO, you may want to focus on the long tailed niche phrases since most searchers are doing fairly descriptive and intelligent searches these days. Ideally you want to attract those who already know what they are looking for and just need to find your pages more easily. With practice and the right training you can go after highly competitive phrases too but you'll find that the best conversions nearly always come from the niches. Also remember that it is the basic SEO skills that carry you through and must come before any of the advanced strategies. The result will be stable top rankings that stand the test of time with minimal fuss.

8. Give your readers a non-threatening reason to respond right now.

What is the objective for your page and does your Web copy work effectively at fulfilling that objective? It may not always be about trying to sell a product or a service. It should not be about fulfilling your needs first but it should be about meeting the needs of why that searcher first conducted a search. Meet their needs and deliver up something that satisfies their search first and then give the visitor a non-threatening reason why they might respond to you. Do you want their e-mail address? Or do you just want them to pick up the phone and call? Never lose sight of the fact that the Web is a marvelous two way interactive experience, if you want it to be. Make your Web site a vehicle for relationship building and remember that many readers may actually have the desire to interact and participate through Blogs or other "User Generated activity." Give your visitors something that involves their participation.

9. Remember that your readers always want to feel like they are in control of their Web experience.

People often use the Web for researching topics of interest or doing preliminary price comparisons or for looking up information. While most people explore the Web for their own purposes, the more that you put them in control of their experience the better. If appropriate, you may want to consider adding additional tools or functionality to your Web site in order to enhance its usability for your specific audience.

10. Did you know that if you write your content so that it naturally "reads very well."

You will naturally gain some bonus for having created content of quality. By this, I mean content...that reads well to a human being. Don't stuff keywords all over the place. Instead, use moderation in everything you do. One of the things you need to understand is that "theme based" search engines like Google, are actually using a measure of artificial intelligence (AI) to measure how well your article "reads" based on all of the overall context of your body text (other than the keywords) based on data that a search engine has gathered concerning a specific topic. This is great news for writers because if you are making a transition to writing for the web, you'll find some search engines are literally rewarding pages that are "well written."

Want Free Search Engine Traffic? Choose the Correct Keywords!

If content is king, make your keywords your servants! It's pretty simple; good keywords bring lots of traffic, bad ones don't. If you want that free search engine traffic, the first thing you need to do is to find out what exactly it is that people are searching for in the area that you are interested in. Then you pick key words that relate to your topic of interest, and that people are really searching for. You can have the best content in the world, but if you optimize for the wrong keywords you still won't get that sought after traffic.
For example, let's assume I am going to build a site about water heaters, and I want people to come to my site. I need to find out what kind of information about water heaters that people are looking for so I can build pages optimized for the keywords that people are really using.

The first thing I do is go to a keyword tool to do my keyword research. There are a number of keyword tools online, my favorite is Wordtracker. Others include Keyword Discovery, and the Google AdWords suggestion tool There is simply no substitute for doing your keyword research. With these tools you can put in a seed word or phrase, and the tools will provide you with lists of related keywords and keyword phrases that are searched for, and how many times per month they are searched for. Using these tools there are ways to estimate the size of the market for products and services, ways to optimize you web pages, find new niche markets, and much more.

With Wordtracker I find quickly that many more people search for "tankless water heater" than search for water heater...which surprises me. Nearly as many people search for "hot water heater" as search for "water heater". Wordtracker also informs me that there are far fewer websites trying to be ranked high for "hot water heater" than for "water heater". Ah-Ha! I'll be sure to optimize a few pages for "hot water heater". In fact, I find that the terms "tankless water heater", "tankless hot water heater", "tankless water heaters", "electric tankless water heaters", and "tankless heaters" all have more people searching for them than "water heater".

Single word keywords are very difficult to get high rankings for, so it's wise to shoot for longer keyword phrases. Three and four word phrases are what I use most often.
After finding out what information people are looking for, and what keywords they are using to find that information, you can build the appropriate pages and optimize them for those keywords that have significant traffic searching for them.
Now that we have our keyword list and we are ready to build our pages, where do we put the keywords?

The first and probably one of the most important places to have your keywords are in the title tag. This is one of the tags in the head section of the html code of your web page and lists the title that is displayed in the web browser. Internet Explorer displays this tag in the top bar of the browser window. It's very important that you always write for humans. The search engines are getting smarter and smarter, and they are looking for sites optimized for humans, not search engines.

Get some of your keywords into the keyword meta tag, not crucial but it won't hurt.

Make sure you have some keywords in your Alt tags for your images...don't overdo it though. Write it for humans, but try to work a few keywords in if you can. Alt tags are displayed as a popup when you pass your mouse over an image.

The Description Meta Tag is still a valuable place to use your keywords. Many search engines will look at the description Meta tag for keywords to compare against your body copy. Yahoo uses your description tag as the description of your site in their listings. Consider the description tag just like it is named, a concise description of your site. Keep under 50 words.

Your body copy is obviously a very important place for placement of your keywords. Remember, write for humans. If your keywords don't appear in your body copy, you won't place high in the search engine results for those keywords. Work your keyword into the text appropriately. Select one or two keywords and make the page specifically about those keywords.

Use your keywords appropriately for humans on your site where you can. This will increase your search engine effectiveness.

Do-It-Yourself SEO: A Beginner's Checklist

There have always been do-it-yourselfers succeeding at web promotion and search engine optimization. In fact, many of the established businesses offering web services today came from humble beginnings, perhaps nothing more than a college student with a laptop, an internet connection, and too much free time. The Web evolves as the result of the innovation and experimentation of individuals. The sharing of knowledge. The do-it-yourself attitude.

As text link brokers and mass link networking decrease in value and use in social media increases, it becomes more important for companies to have an internal approach and awareness of search engine marketing. Don't get me wrong; outsourcing to SEO firms is still a smart option. That said, making the most out of Web 2.0 usually requires some level of cooperation between SEO firm and site owner. You don't need to be an expert to know the basics of good SEO practices, and that added knowledge will be a great advantage whether you're working along side an SEO team, or promoting your own site in your spare time.

So if you're on a "need to know" basis with SEO, the following points should illustrate what an overall plan should include:

1. Create Search Engine-Friendly Content

Unique web content is your most valuable asset, and ensuring search engines can read it is crucial. Text embedded in images or Flash cannot be read, so make sure you use important keywords, headings, and hyperlinks in plain text form. Instead of using images as navigation links, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) makes it easy to format those links to look more like 'buttons', thus creating powerful anchor text as well as making it visually appealing. Use heading tags properly and don't try to hide keywords or text by making it the same color as the page background or shrinking it so it can't be seen. Make sure the keywords you wish to rank high for are used frequently in the page copy but within reason.

Now that you've created good content, is it actually being crawled? Copy and paste a page's URL into a search engine to see if it has been indexed. If you've just created the page, it may take a few days to show up. Aside from age, many factors can lead to web pages not being indexed by search engines, such as duplicate content (ie. a printer-friendly version of a page might be indexed and the normal version not, or vice versa); links generated by JavaScript instead of HTML; poor site architecture (ie. using too many sub-directories); lengthy, dynamically generated URLs using special characters; and orphaned pages.

2. Choose Your Keywords Wisely

One of the first steps of SEO, this one needs to be done properly the first time or all your future efforts and promotion could end up being wasted. Start by writing down general terms that describe your products, services or web content. Use keyword research services to investigate word and phrase variations. Wordtracker, KeywordDiscovery, and the Google AdWords suggestion tool are good starting points. The goal is to find those niche phrases that your target market uses to find sites just like yours and optimize your site for them. If the phrases do not get enough use by searchers, your profits from ranking for them will be low. At the same time, stay away from general terms that are tougher to rank for (ie. like "art", "computers", "business", etc.) as a great portion of the traffic will be irrelevant and you'll break the bank attaining such competitive phrases.

3. Get Others to Link to Your Site

In theory there are countless ways, some traditional and some quite innovative, to get other web sites to link to yours. In practice, it can be easier said than done. Google defines a link as it pertains to rankings and SEO as a "vote" from one site to another. The more quality votes your site receives, the greater chance you have of rankings well. If a well established site links to yours, that link carries more weight than one would from a mom & pop shop or less reputable page.

If your site has useful content and is doing something unique, you're already ahead of much of the competition. People need a reason to link to your site, as very few will do it out of the goodness of their heart. Trading links can work, but link exchange networks have decreased in value and won't be of much use in competitive fields. Buying links, if you haven't heard, is a big Google no-no. While entire articles could be written on this topic, here are a few popular methods of acquiring incoming links:

- issuing company press releases with a link back to your site
- submitting to reputable business directories such as Yahoo! and Business.com
- be active on related blogs by commenting and exchanging ideas
- if you have clients with web sites, ask if they would mind adding your link in a "partners" section
- participate in relevant forums and discussion boards with a link in your signature
- write and submit original articles to web publications in your field with a link in your bio
- get involved in social media and bookmarking

4. Join the Social Media Revolution

The collaboration between Internet users and the development of online communities is at an all-time high. Social bookmarking sites such as Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Furl, Reddit, and Technorati offer users a way to store their favorite pages and media online, and share it with others. These services also provide a way to promote your own content or create a buzz over a product or service. Creating a Myspace page or Squidoo "lens" is also a way to network and share information.

However, if your goal is to generate sales then you must offer something without the promotional hype. The reality of social media is that popularity is based almost entirely on public interest. If your information or media isn't unique or of interest to anyone, you cannot force success using social media communities.

The key to using social media and bookmarking sites to your advantage is to not be shy. Network with other users, bookmark and share useful content, create eye-catching titles for your entries, and tell your friends and co-workers to vote on content you have on these sites.

These four points are a general guideline to follow for SEO. Search engine optimization experts and firms are a good outsourcing option in competitive markets, while the DIY attitude can yield great results for web site owners with smaller marketing budgets. As an email marketer you may face email deliverability issues every day. Whether you're sending a personal email or bulk customer communication, electronic messages are frequently intercepted, filtered, erroneously labeled as spam, bounced or returned to the sender as undeliverable. For routine non-business correspondence, this is simply a minor annoyance and inconvenience. But when your message broadcasts a crisis or emergency, or if it includes time-sensitive account, billing or service information, you could face serious consequences. If you're a marketer, every undelivered message translates into lost revenue. Luckily, there are ways to improve the odds of delivery and decrease the chance of running into problems in the first place.

The key to email deliverability lies in earning the trust of Internet Service Providers, or ISPs. Because these companies need to provide quality service to their subscribers, they devise standard protocols and policies regarding unsolicited bulk email. To communicate with your subscribers and customers, without interference, focus on four key criteria proven to optimize deliverability rates.

1. Mind Your Lists.

How relevant is your list? You should only add recipients via responsible opt-in practices, removing bounced accounts and unsubscribe requests immediately. What does your message say about your company? Advance your brand and professional reputation by sending well-designed, organized and relevant email communications. Segment distribution lists and customize messages whenever possible. You should also make sure that domain names for landing pages have a public Whois record and a clearly linked Privacy Policy.

3. Use Email Authentication.

Take advantage of email authentication technologies. One such solution is Sender Policy Framework (SPF), providing an open-standard, technical method for preventing address forgery.

4. Understand Reputation.

What do your past actions say about you? ISPs filter spam based on your company, domain name and private IP address reputation. Building a solid reputation in these areas takes time, and the only way to build it is by sending legitimate emails and following practices. Send legitimate emails, clean your lists and avoid complaints. Make sure that your email service provider or email servers are setup with private IP addresses so that you repuation is only impacted by your email marketing practices.

Once you've taken all proactive email delivery strategies, use the reporting tools in your email marketing software to measure overall delivery. If you find specific ISPs are blocking your blast communications even though you've followed best practices, contact them right away to resolve the matter and apply for whitelist status.

Email marketing benefits are undeniable. With diligent efforts, marketers can dramatically increase business-critical email communication deliverability and improve their bottom line.

How do I get targeted traffic? Here are some effective techniques:

Forums:

Whatever your topic, there's sure to be at least one forum about it. Subscribe to a couple of forums. Join in the discussions, answer questions, and ask pertinant questions yourself. Become known as an expert in the field. Then with each article reply you write, have a discreet link to your website in the signature file. What can be placed in your signature is often determined by the forum moderators. Do not spam the forum or you will be stopped from posting. What is the deal with Meta Tags?

Search Engine Optimizers often have two different views when it comes to meta tags. One this is unanimous meta tags have definitely been devalued for use in most major search engines but you will find they are still being used as the description often times when your site is listed in the search results.

Meta tags were started back in the early 90's when the Internet was just getting its brand new legs and they were used to help the search engines organize the growing number of web pages. This was an easy way to get your site indexed and listed high.

Soon after unethical webmasters started to abuse the meta tag by either spamming the page full of keywords or sometimes even made different websites appear in the results for a completely different keyword. Gambling sites would stuff their meta tags with more commonly used phrases in order to bring their sites to the first page and trick the search engine and moreover the user.

Now obviously, most search engines have discontinued the use of meta tags for organizing their search results. Algorithms have become much more technologically advanced and they use a number of other methods for indexing and sorting. The big question is if they are no longer viewed as a helpful tag, why do some SEO's still use them?

Meta tags come in a multitude of different names and uses, so which ones do you use? There are four that I often find myself using when I am optimizing a site. They are as follows:

Meta Robots:
This tag is still widely supported and it simply tells the search bots to either follow the URL through or you can ask them not to index certain parts of your site for aspects that may not be relevant to your actual site.

Meta Description:
My favorite tag. This is your first impression, if you don't have this tag search engines will just tag clips of your index page including the keyword that was being searched for by the surfer. First impressions often is the difference between a sale or no sale.

Meta Keywords:
A controversial meta tag, some use it, some don't. I still thinks it holds a bit of value if you keep it simple. Don't add more than 20 or so keywords, as I think it does increase your on-page keyword density.

Meta Content Type:
This is recommended because you may find that if you do not have this tag it could cause display problems.

Now, most search engines don't use the meta tags as they did in the early nineties, but as I explained you can still use them for a variety of other reasons. There is of course a number of opinions on this matter: Some SEO firms are strong believers in the meta tag and other firms are strongly against it.

In conclusion, my opinion is that meta tags can be used for a number of alternative reasons and still offer you a great place to sell your stuff.

I always will recommend the use of at least a small number of Meta Tags, and if used correctly they will greatly improve your chances of more sales and higher rankings.

I know a fair amount evanglish and little bit about blogging, so I've combined the two to provide some insights into the evanglisme of a blog.

1. THINK "BOOK," NOT "DIARY". A diary contains your spontaneous thoughts and feelings; you have no plans for others to read it. By contrast, if you write a book, from Day One you should be thinking about spreading the word about it. If you want to evangelize your blog, think of it as a product you're trying to sell and market the heck out of it.

2. ANSWER THE LITTLE MAN. Imagine there's little man sitting on your shoulder reading what you're writting. Every time you write an entry, he says "So what? Who gives a shii-take?" If you can't answer the little man, then you don't have good blog/product. It's tough to market crap, so make sure you have something worth saying.

3. PROMOTE VIA E-MAIL.When I first started my blog, I sent out 10,000 e-mail announcements to all the people who had contacted my company in the previous nine years. Don't buy address lists or send spam to people, because for e-mail promotion to be effective, you must know the recepient, or the recipient must know you. More e-mail tips : Whenever you answer an e-mail mention your blog, and make sure your e-mail signature contains blog's address.

4. LINK TO OTHERS. If I had to do it over again, I would have looked for interesting blog that cover topics similar to mine. Then, I would have blog-rolled them all to ensure that Technorati pinged my blog so bloggers could find me. I use Blogrolling.com to create my current blog roll. I use NetNewsWire and Endo to look for new links to my blog, and I find sites that I would never have seen were it not for their links to my site.

5. SUPPLEMENT OTHERS BLOGGER. Read the blogs of the top 50 bloggers (use Technorati ranking) and see if you have in-depth knowledge about their topic. Then craft a real essay that complements the bloggers entry. One of the biggest challengers bloggers face is feeding the content beast. If you can help me feed it, I'll gladly link to you.

6. ACKNOWLEDGE AND RESPOND TO COMMENTERS. Only good things can happen when you all the comments on your blog and respond to them. It makes commenters feel like they are part of your community and encourage others to read your blog.

7. BE BOLD. I'm not saying to intentionally piss off other bloggers, but if you can't speak your mind on your own blog, you might as well give up and stay on the porch. This is the fascinating thing about blogging : Even when people torch you, they link to your site.

8. MAKE IT EASY TO JOIN. I had no idea what Feedburner and Feedblitz did until a blogger named Steven Nipper told me about them. Enable your readers to get to your blog in multiple ways. It's no different than distributing your physical products through multiple cahannels.

11 Proven Strategies to Find Potential Readers

I hate to say it, but blogger’s sometimes get ahead of themselves. (I am no exception). However, this is a relatively new blog (about a month and a bit) and I think I am doing a fairly good job on promoting it. I am starting to see an increase of traffic and ‘life’ while going through the page hits on my awstats and google analytics.

This Blog’s Experience:
Within the month of this blog being online, I pulled in about 7,000-8,000 unique visitors in my first month. As most blogger’s may point out in their own thirst-quenching way, we all want more traffic. There are a few ways to increase the traffic to your blog which may not be considered by most bloggers:

1.Patience. I know, not exactly something that I should start with, but guess what: its true. Bloggers get ahead of the themselves. Unless your extremely lucky or a genius, it takes time to build up readership (unless you want to put in some money into it, then that opens up a whole new side of “how to’s”).
2.Comment on Related/Popular Blogs. I know, not exactly easy to do but if you are helpful and polite, it can definitely increase your chances. If someone comments something rude on this blog, chances are I wont even look at it and pretty much just delete it whenever I feel convenient. (I am sorry, but I like to have a positive feel on my blog, thanks.)
3.Update Frequently. RSS feeds are a great tool and weapon for your blog. Make sure to use it. I try to update my blog once a day in order to try and keep people interested. Unless your blog is overly popular, I wouldn’t post much more than 3-4 posts a day, as it may eventually overwhelm readers and get them to unsubscribe. Then again, if your posts are genuine and worthwhile, keep them coming ;).
4.Join Forums. This is probably a good way to do it. Find a forum that has a high alexa rank and great traffic flow. If you are a webmaster or in business/marketing, check out DigitalPoint. Though not my best source of traffic, it manages to still net me 50-200 visitors daily with only 300 posts (it also depends on how much I post that day and promote). Forum’s are a good way to also gain visibility by putting your site/blog on your signature. They are a great source of backlinks (but not PR juice).
5.Give Stuff Away for Free. Yep, no brainer here. Contests are great. Free Templates are great too. This has been discussed on this blog multiple times. It’s true though, these can help create a lot of back links, which in turn can give you higher page rank. etc etc.
6.Trackbacks. Though I have not utilized trackbacks on THIS blog, I must say that it is a great way to not only gain visibility, but can build a unique income of traffic if the blog is popular enough. (That is the main reason why I have not done many trackback’s yet, I’d hate to write about a heavy hitter and have him/her take a quick look at my blog and think to themselves, “Who is this guy?”). Trackbacks can wait, though they are great, if you know what you are doing.
7.SEO optimization. I know, I know, this topic has been discussed to death here too. Guess why? SEO optimization actually works! 25% of my traffic is coming from Google Search Engines. Wan’t to know what is funny? Some of my posts are on the first page (position’s 3-7 in some cases), and this blog is a PR0. What does this tell you?
8.Backlinks. Of course, the other greatest weapon of them all. I have not done many directory submissions or anything else as of yet (I will give it another month before I start - I wish to get some more content here first), though back links are crucial to your blog or website.
9.Linkbaiting. Something that is a mystery and yet so simple. There are different ways to linkbait a blog, that of which can help you gain the traffic from other blogs quite easily. This is a great way to get some nice traffic flowing to your blog.
10.List of Tips/Resource List. Genuine tips are really attractive to readers because they explain things in just a few seconds. Wan’t to know why you see them everywhere? because they work. Better yet, include sources to where you’ve seen these tips to the actual post and watch the fun. On my other blog I had a list of 22 tips; out of those 22, 17 trackbacked to my ‘resource’ list of posts
11.Social Bookmarking. You’ve probably heard of it. Heck, you’ve probably joined a few. Technorati, Digg, Stumblupon, Mybloglog, BlogCatalog, Entrecard, Deli.cio.us, Reddit, and many more. These are great for getting traffic if use properly.

Conclusion:
This is only the first splattering of tips. Though common guidelines, many blogger’s forget about the basics and try to work on the advanced ones. You have to walk before you can run. However, being outside of the box can always be beneficial sometimes, too

Maybe you have seen the Entrecard widget on many blogs and you may have wondered what this is? Well, Entrecard is the new method to get free traffic to your blog by advertising your 125×125 ad for free on other blogs.
I have joined Entrecard, and I must give some credits for that to 134u.Com, because I’ve joined after visit his blog.

My traffic from Entrecard
My stats on Google Analytics displays to kind of referring site: entrecard.com (displays the visits you receive from entrecard.com - people who drops card on your blog) and entrecard.s3.amazonaws.com (visits from blogs where your ad is displaying). I can see these numbers in my Entrecard Dashboard, too.
In two weeks, I received 417 visits from people who drop their cards to my blog and 400 visits from ads I placed on other blog. That means about 800 visits in two weeks, for about 15 minutes/day of work. Isn’t that something?

2 tips for placing your ad
1. When you choose blogs where you want to advertise on, try to choose those that have the Entrecard widget displayed on the first visible screen, for their visitors to see you better. If the widget is displayed on the bottom of the page, your chance to be seen is lower.
2. Try to place your ad on those blogs who have a good Alexa Rank (a good traffic). I have Alexa Toolbar installed and I follow pretty easy the blog’s Alexa Rank. I choose to advertise on blogs with an Alexa Rank up to 5-600,000.
I have to admit that I have advertised also on blogs with a low Alexa Rank, but with Entrecard widget placed on the first visible screen.

My advice
If your blog is new, just launched or you have low traffic, Entrecard is a good way to drive traffic to your blog and to get known. You don’t have to work too hard for this and you can advertise on high traffic blogs without spending any money. How cool is that?

7. Search engines : Select the Add keywords tab followed by Add. To download keywords used in your site, click ‘Get keywords from site’. Your website will appear in the screen then click OK twice. Click Find New Partners and list of potential linking partners will be produced.
8. Requesting links : A large number of websites offers a standard form to you to request a link, whereas others might ask you email them. When you have found the websites suitable for your site to link to, find the page on which they offer links to other sites.
9. Link Request Form : Under Title, enter a specific title relating to your product/service, remembering to include your relevant keywords. You can go into more detail in the Description box; including more keywords will help increase your relevance for Google’s natural listing.

Start an argument with another member
And by this, it doesn’t mean you start a nasty kind of argument. Just a normal debate between you and another member where you quote each other and try to disprove your opponents’ claim or point of view.

When a debate starts in a particular thread between two members, other members usually don’t interfere. But this doesn’t mean they are not reading. They silently read the debate and derive their own conclusions.

When creating a campaign it is important to create many ad groups and many campaigns. Your ads should match your landing page as much as possible. Once I have a very specific category picked out and creative written for the ad I set up my negative keywords at the campaign level. I then create an ad group that contains the basic root keyword phrases. This will be mostly 2 to 3 word phrases. I set them.all to broad match. I then create an exact negative keyword for each phase. This is my catchall group. My next group is set up the same accept I set them to phrase match. The third group is exact match. I set the same phrases from the first 2 groups in here and set them to exact matches. Try to repeat this process as many times as you can to make sure your ads reflect your landing pages and keywords. Don’t assume that you can catch all searches with your root keywords in broad match. It is very important to come up with good add-on keywords for your broad and phrase matches. Try to come up with as many as you can. Google does not show your ad every time your broad match terms are typed in.

You can have all of the marketing knowledge and experience possible and you will still struggle to get repeat visits without good, solid content. Content creation should always be a priority and plenty of time should be devoted to it.

2. Display your subscription link prominently.

RSS and email subscribers to your blog are far more likely to return on a regular basis than non-subscribers. This is one of the main reasons that subscribers are so important. Make it as easy as possible for visitors to subscribe by putting the links in a place where visitors will notice right away.

Bookmark managers like Del.icio.us are great for helping people keep track of pages that they might want to return to at a later time. 7. Send a personal email to first-time commenters.

There are plugins out there that will send an automated email to readers when they leave their first comment. I’ve received plenty of these emails and only 2 or 3 have ever sounded genuine or encouraged me to click on the link back to the blog. I have had really good success with sending a short, personal email to new readers to say thanks (although I have struggled recently to keep this up). A personal note of appreciation can be very beneficial. It’s also a good idea to click-through to their website or blog and mention something about it in your email. It shows them that your message is not automated and that you care enough to visit their site.

8. Write a series of blog posts.

Many bloggers effectively use series of posts to build anticipation and interest. If you have a topic that contains a lot of information, consider breaking it up and presenting it as a series.
